Along with the Southwest heat, intense heat and high humidity are expected to produce widespread heat indices of 105-110 degrees across the Mid-South, Southeast, and Gulf Coast through the weekend, the weather service said as the weekend began on Saturday.

The relentless heat has already claimed the lives of at least 18 people in the metro area of Phoenix, and as of July 15, 69 other people are believed to have died from heat-related illnesses.

 Forecast for the Coming Weeks: The heat is expected to linger in the Southwest at least through July 28, with a slight improvement after that, according to the weather service. Although the heat has been consistent throughout the past few weeks in the Desert Southwest, the Rocky Mountains, and much of the Plains have been spared long stretches of extreme heat this summer, according to AccuWeather. However, that is about to change. Hot summertime conditions are expected to spread over most of the rest of the Lower 48 from mid-week through the weekend, the weather service predicts. Many locations in the Midwest could reach their highest temperatures of the year.

The heat is expected to spread to the Ohio Valley and the mid-Atlantic by next week, as forecasted by the Climate Prediction Center's forecast map. Temperatures could reach 90 degrees or higher in the Northeast late next week.

The majority of the country is projected to see above-normal temperatures in August, with widespread above-normal temperatures across most of the country. Only a small part of the Upper Midwest is expected to see below-average temperatures in August.
